Where Is the Joint Sand Going? A Tampa Bay Paver Inspection Checklist
Quick answer: Sand loss is a symptom. Before adding more sand, find out whether runoff, pressure washing, shallow joints, ants, movement or the wrong sand system caused it. Refill only after the pavers and drainage are sound.
Inspect five places before ordering sand
Low points and downspouts: Look for channels, splash marks and piles of sand at the end of a drainage path. Redirect water and correct settled pavers where appropriate.
Joint depth: Check several representative locations. Surface dusting over debris or old material will not create a sound joint. The sand manufacturer's instructions determine preparation and fill level.
Paver movement: Step on suspect units and look for rocking or edge settlement. Stabilizing sand cannot replace base repair or releveling.
Cleaning damage: A concentrated pressure washer stream can excavate joints. Document how much sand is removed during cleaning, then prepare and refill consistently.
Existing sealer: If a coating bridges the joint, flakes or turns white, diagnose compatibility and moisture before applying another stabilizing product.
Choose the joint system after diagnosis
Different joint sands and sealers have different requirements for joint width, depth, dryness and activation. Follow the selected products' current instructions. Keep sand below the appropriate paver surface level, remove residue, and test a small representative section. A joint-stabilizing sealer can reduce routine sand loss when the preparation and product match; it does not rebuild a failed base or permanently eliminate weeds and insects.
