Why joints lose sand

Water patterns and joint condition tell the story

Heavy rain, roof runoff, irrigation, aggressive washing, shallow joint fill, vehicle traffic, edge movement and drainage problems can remove sand from between pavers.

Before adding material, Restore Paver Company looks at joint depth, paver movement, low areas and the direction water travels. Simply sweeping sand over a dirty or unstable surface can hide the issue without correcting the preparation.

The plan is matched to the condition of the pavement and the finish selected for the project.

A six-step joint restoration system

STEP 01

Inspect the joints

We review sand depth, paver movement, edges, drainage and traffic patterns.

STEP 02

Clean the surface

Loose debris, organic growth and failed joint material are removed where the scope requires.

STEP 03

Allow proper readiness

The pavers and joints are brought to the condition required for the selected material and system.

STEP 04

Install compatible material

Fresh joint material is distributed evenly and brought to an appropriate level below the paver surface.

STEP 05

Clean paver faces

Excess material is removed from the surface before stabilization or sealing proceeds.

STEP 06

Stabilize and review

When included, a compatible system binds the upper joint material and project-specific care instructions follow.

System performance

Stabilization helps, but it is not permanent weed-proofing

Properly filled joints and a compatible stabilizing sealer can inhibit weed growth, ant activity and future sand loss. They cannot permanently eliminate airborne seeds, insects, structural movement or erosion caused by unresolved water flow.

Drainage still matters. Concentrated runoff or irrigation can continue to erode joints even after a well-prepared restoration.

Right material, right scope

Not every surface needs the same sand or installation method

Joint width, paver design, traffic, drainage and the selected sealer all affect the recommendation. We confirm compatibility instead of treating every driveway, patio and pool deck the same.

Why does paver joint sand keep washing out?

Common causes include runoff, irrigation, aggressive washing, shallow fill, traffic and movement. The pattern should be inspected before more sand is added.

Will stabilization stop every weed and ant?

No system can promise permanent prevention. Correctly filled and stabilized joints can inhibit growth and activity and make maintenance easier.

Do all pavers use the same joint sand?

No. Joint width, paver type, drainage and the selected sealing system affect material compatibility and installation.

Should pavers be sealed after sanding?

A compatible stabilizing sealer can help bind the upper joint material, but the surface and sand must meet the selected product requirements.

Can joint sand fix loose or sunken pavers?

Joint material does not correct every base, edge or leveling problem. Movement and settlement should be evaluated separately.
